Dave Bliss, former basketball coach at Baylor, has resigned as head coach at Southwestern Christian University in Oklahoma. Bliss' repeated claims that murdered Baylor player Patrick Dennehy was a drug dealer were later shown to be a cover for the fact that Bliss paid Dennehy's tuition so that he could play at Baylor.
I met Dave Bliss while he was the basketball coach at Oklahoma in the mid-1970s, and I had a long one-on-one chat with him. He was one of the slimiest people I have ever met. There was something disingenuous about him from the first word that came out of his mouth. I never liked the man, and history has proven my instincts to be correct.
Why is it some people can detect a bullzookter so easily, yet they manage to convince other, otherwise smart people?
They believe that he can win games, and they can keep the other stuff under wraps.
For the 1975-'76 season, Oklahoma basketball was moving into a new arena after playing for years in a small gym in the middle of campus, much like Florida Gym where the Gators played when I was in school at UF. They wanted to make a big splash, but no name coach would take the job. They then resorted to the "coaching tree" strategy. Bliss had been an assistant under Bobby Knight at Indiana.
Florida had done much the same thing going into my freshman year by hiring John Lotz, who had been an assistant under Dean Smith at North Carolina. The main difference was that Lotz had a conscience.
