Wondering who will be our starting QB for the bowl game, Miller or Brown? Also hoping Napier and company is successful with the portal, we need lots of help for next year!

I’ve heard good things about the QB leaving NC State but I haven’t seen him play. I looked yesterday and it looks like there will be several 4 star QBs transferring so hopefully that shakes out for us. Having to throw a totally green QB out there would not be ideal next season.

Yep. I've been kind of trying to track the portal here: www.on3.com/transfer-portal/top/football/2023/Focus needs to be on QB, WR, and Defense especially front 7. There's a few that fit those bills and have good geography (Napier had good success in Louisiana so far and Florida is Florida), but we haven't emerged as front runners on anybody as of yet. Hoping that starts to switch sooner than later.

Granted, I'm not up on all of the QBs in the portal, but we could do far worse than Devin Leary from NC State. Strong, accurate arm, tends to play his best in big games.

Yep, Miller has a chance to show what he's got in Vegas. I'm not super optimistic, because we haven't beaten a ranked team since Utah. But we're 1-0 vs the Pac12 so we got that goin' for us. Which is nice. RG

Pretty sure they will take Publix coupons.

Just out of curiosity what are ticket prices like for this game? If you buy through the university, they are $110. That said, it's lower level, so I won't need oxygen. When I went to homecoming, the Missouri game was one of three for which you could get tickets for $30 each through Costco, up to four seats.

I’d take a flyer on that kid hitting the portal. His numbers aren’t bad. Again, haven’t really watched him play. 2 years of eligibility left though.

"The Florida Gators are searching for a new signal-caller after Anthony Richardson announced that he will be preparing for the 2023 NFL Draft and Jalen Kitna’s dismissal. McCall would be suitable for the role. However, four-star recruit Jaden Rashada is set to join the team next season, and there would more than likely be a battle for the starting role. If McCall can win the job, he could help the Gators become contenders in the SEC again." Article: bvmsports.com/2022/12/14/grayson-mccall-transferring-5-possible-landing-spots/I suppose it makes sense, assuming Miller is not the guy and Rashada isn't quite ready. But a one and done QB doesn't exactly scream "team leader" to me. Edit: it seems he has 2 years of eligibility left. RG

Pretty sure we have the 2nd most guys in the portal behind Texas A&M. Long way to go.

Pretty sure we have the 2nd most guys in the portal behind Texas A&M. Long way to go. When you look at where we have been the last two years, that may not be a bad thing. Some of the players who are leaving probably prefer laxity to discipline, and if that is the case, they can show their talents somewhere else. Players are bailing at A&M because the ship is sinking. They are bailing here because they want it easier, IMO. Only about 40 percent of the players who hit the portal find an equivalent landing spot, so there's that.

They are bailing here because they want it easier, IMO. Only about 40 percent of the players who hit the portal find an equivalent landing spot, so there's that. I really hope you're right, but we've lost some guys that were blue chips at positions of need (let's be real, after the bowl game it appears that every position aside from RB is a position of need), like: 1) McMillan and Collier at safety where we are replacing 2 guys expected to be drafted in the middle rounds (still blows my mind that Dean is considered a future pro, but they know more than me) 2) Lee, Summerall, and Borders on the Defensive line, Dexter is gone and Watson is a novelty that would be fine in small doses, but for some reason this staff seems to think that he's a 3 down player. We're super thin on the edge. 3) Diwun Black at LBer, we just don't have any depth at LBer and he was a hybrid LB/SS 4) Reynolds, Shorter, and WIttemore at WR. Reynolds can separate but can't catch, the other 2 have the opposite problem but beggars can't be choosers and we are most certainly beggars at this point. Also lost a TE somehow when I didn't think we had any TEs to lose. 5) Richardson, even though his footwork was a mess 60-70% of the time on short and intermediate throws which left him spraying the ball, and he seemed loathe to keep the ball on a read option, the combination of his arm strength, deep ball accuracy (which was somehow much better than his short stuff), and running/big play ability set up everything we did on offense this year. Nobody can replicate his physical gifts, but when we didn't scare anybody over the top or breaking the pocket we saw the result. We absolutely need a guy that defenses at least respect if not fear. Early results indicate that Miller is far from that guy. So, short story long, we have to kick ass in the portal. I mean like 6-8 starters and 12-15 rotation players kick ass. Our class is dropping and we've lost 3 straight 4-5 stars to Miami that were considered Florida leans. I don't doubt that they may very well rethink their decision like Rashada did, but the problem is signing day is Wednesday so these recent ones are way less likely to flip in time. There's a pretty decent chance that Miami could be next year's Texas A&M, but if we have another losing season will we really be a destination? NIL, the portal, and the expanded play-offs have accelerated time-tables drastically. The difference between the haves and have-nots will continue to grow. I don't mind losing these kids IF we bring in better ones to replace them. Otherwise we're moving the wrong way, and the slide is going to be that much tougher to stop.

So, short story long, we have to kick ass in the portal. I have a feeling that we will. This is a big name program with a lot of opportunity. I am hoping for a couple of changes in the staff, but don't know if we will get them.

Okay this is insane to me having watched this team play live twice this year, but the mock I just saw has:
Dexter- 1st round, 16 pick Dean- 2, 47 Richardson- 2,50 O'Cyrus Torrence- 2, 62 Burney- 3, 78 R. Torrence- 3, 87
I think somebody falls in love with A/R and takes him first round. Trey Dean I will never understand, Burney kind of came out of nowhere I had not seen him that early. Guessing Miller fell to the 4-5 range. But how the Hell did we have the worst Defense in program history with 4 guys that are in consideration for first or second day picks? Better question, why does Toney still have a job?

The second question ties directly to the first. This pretty much tells me that the problem was scheme and strategy, not talent.

Seems like a decent pick up on the surface. He has almost as many ints as tds in his career but I didn’t dig any deeper. At least we got a guy with experience on a big stage.

These tranfers not a good sign. Why are they leaving? I thought coach emphasized creating a special culture or something like that. Not sure about NIL money but if that is the real reason then college football is no longer an amateur sport.

Not sure about NIL money but if that is the real reason then college football is no longer an amateur sport. 6-7 probably has something to do with it. Players want to win and maybe they just didn’t feel like it was going to happen for them here. This team needs a lot of help all over the field and honestly I think we’re a few years from being competitive on the National stage. Losing 4/5ths of our starting oline isn’t going to expedite success either.

Apart from the few dynasties that players don't want to leave once they get there, rosters are going to be pretty transient in this era of what is essentially college free agency. It's going to be tough for most programs to maintain any kind of consistency.

Especially after a coaching / culture shake up. We live in a world of instant gratification. If these guys don’t feel like they signed up for the shift they know they can just leave. I agree with you this isn’t going to only affect us. Hopefully CBN can use the portal to our advantage.

Bring in a no-nonsense task master like Napier, and Mullen types don't like it.

Disciplinarians can chase off talent, UNLESS the talent sees the results it brings. So far, we have no results to show for the discipline. RG
