I learned today of the passing of Frank B. Wickes. Mr. Wickes was the director of the Gator Band beginning my freshman year in 1973. After several years at UF, he moved on to LSU, where he was on the music faculty for many years.
Talk about a small world. I went to a restaurant in my neighborhood to pick up lunch. The young man working the outside drive through saw the gator head magnet on my vehicle, and he mentioned that he went to LSU. I told him that I had heard earlier in the day of the passing of my former band director, who had taught at both schools, and that one of my Gator Band pals went to graduate school at LSU and studied under him. As it turns out, this young man was a trombone player in the Tiger Band from 2003-2006, and he played for Frank Wickes. He was sad to hear of his passing. What are the chances that we would have played for the same director, 30 years apart.
