Two years ahead of schedule, the college football playoff will expand from four teams to 12 at the end of the 2024 season. The final obstacle was working out an agreement with the Rose Bowl, which has been resolved. Had he Rose Bowl not reached an agreement, they may have been left out of the next television contract. It’s always the effing Rose Bowl. So proud they are. Sometimes I think that if I hear "the granddaddy of 'em all" one more time, I'm going to throw a hammer at the television.

I am still skeptical about the 12 team playoff. I just see it as rewarding programs from lesser conferences and/or who play lesser schedules than SEC teams. Look at the PAC 12 for example, media darling USC lost to Utah twice now and the B2B Conf Champs (Utah) couldn't even beat a 6-6 Gator team. Tulane would be in the playoffs as of this morning and Clemson as well (a team that is undefeated in their conference but lost to Notre Dame and an SEC Team in SC).
Perception also will play a factor as currently people dont go nuts over 2 SEC teams being in a 4 team playoff (50% representation) but does one truly think the playoff committee would ever keep that % with say 6 SEC teams in a 12 team playoff? I highly doubt it. 2 loss (hell possibly 3 loss teams pending their schedule) SEC teams will be punished over the undefeated non power 5 teams, 1 loss lesser Power 5 teams or 2 loss power 5 champs (like Clemson may be this year).
Bottom line is conferences and schedules are not equal in college football and the sound of a 12 team playoff sounds great but i am highly skeptical as to how many additional SEC teams other than the 1-2 in the current format will be rewarded with playoff spots.
My ultimate solution would be some form of a 32 or larger team tourney that would allow for these lesser programs to participate in or Just have the SEC break away from the rest of the pack all together.
a 16 team SEC with no divisions and no non conference play would be very interesting. you could also keep non conf play but limit it to 2 games only and have a 10 team SEC schedule. It ensures SEC teams will play each other far more than they do now and the teams who want to keep games like Fla vs GA, Bama vs Aub, Bama vs Tenn, Ole Miss vs Miss st etc. can always book those games as non conference games in the years they dont match up on the SEC schedule.
I am very weary of a playoff that assumes CFB is like the NFL (less parody between teams) than MLB (big difference between big $ clubs and low $ clubs)

I personally think an 8 team playoff is ideal, but once they've gone to 12, they'll never cut it back down - too much money available.
But at 8 or 12, more powerful leagues might have to think about playing a championship game. It gives one of their top teams a loss and drops them down, possibly out, of the playoff. Smaller leagues would still want to have one, to bolster their one team's chances of locking a spot.
CFB, it ain't what it used to be.
