Florida 52, Eastern Washington 17 - Opportunity for much-needed snaps for backups. Because there were so many quick strike plays by the Gators, the Eagles dominated time of possession. The Gators averaged 13.9 yards per play, with 663 yards total offense, including 393 yards passing. The Gators averaged 17.9 yards per pass play, and ten yards per rush. Anthony Richardson threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Justin Shorter in the first quarter. Jalen Kitna threw a 62-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. EWU is a traditional power in FCS and a frequent playoff team, but they were punching out of their class today. In years past, they have beaten Washington State and a ranked Oregon State team. The game announcers said that this game came about because of Jim McElwain, who was a quarterback at EWU.
Ole Miss 22, Kentucky 19 - A 26 yard field goal with 2:19 remaining decided it. Kentucky had what would have been a go-ahead touchdown negated by a penalty, then they lost a fumble on the next play.
Georgia 26, Missouri 22 - The Bulldogs, trailing 13-0 early, never led until scoring a touchdown with 4:06 remaining. The Tigers made critical mistakes with offensive penalties that kept them from putting the game away.
Alabama 49, Arkansas 26 - The Crimson Tide lost QB Bryce Young to a shoulder injury in the second quarter. The Razorbacks cut the lead to 28-23 after being down 28-0, but a 21-point fourth quarter clinched it for Alabama.
Mississippi State 42, Texas A&M 24 - And it wasn't this close. A&M scored with 1:34 remaining to cut the margin to 18. The Bulldogs had touchdowns on an interception and a blocked field goal return. They also scored on a 75-yard pass play.
South Carolina 50, South Carolina State 10 - The Gamecocks outgained the Bulldogs 404-220. Sloppy game with six turnovers, three by each side. State did not score in the first half. This game was moved up from October 1 because of the possibility of Hurricane Ian striking the Carolinas on Saturday.
LSU 21, Auburn 17 - Auburn led 17-0 in the first half. The game began to turn on a 23-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the second quarter, then an offensive touchdown with 15 seconds remaining in the half made it a three point game.
National games
Wake Forest 31, Florida State 21 - The Demon Deacons led 28-7 in the first half. FSU got as close as 28-21 in the fourth quarter, but a 27-yard field goal with 2:55 remaining put the game out of reach. Goodbye, top 25.
TCU 55, Oklahoma 24 - I haven't seen the Sooners' defense be this bad since the days of John Blake. They gave up 668 yards total offense, and 41 points in the first half. TCU had lost eight straight to Oklahoma.
Illinois 34, Wisconsin 10 - The Badgers had two yards rushing. First win in Madison in 20 years for Illinois.
Purdue 20, Minnesota 10 - The Golden Gophers were held to 47 yards rushing.
Oklahoma State 36, Baylor 25 - A rematch of last years Big 12 title game. The Cowboys led 16-3 at the half and returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown. Baylor scored 22 points in the third quarter to make it an eight point game, but two interceptions in the fourth quarter sealed the Bears' fate.
Boston College 34, Louisville 33 - The Eagles overcame three turnovers, winning it with a field goal with 1:56 remaining.
Maryland 27, Michigan State 13 - After getting shellacked at Minnesota last week, the Spartans fell to 0-2 in the league. They were outgained 489-321.
Kansas 14, Iowa State 11 - The Cyclones shanked a field goal wide left with 36 seconds remaining. The stadium was packed, and you have to reach back a long time for the last time that the field was stormed in Lawrence.
Georgia Tech 26, Pittsburgh 21 - Another ACC top 25 fringe team says goodbye.
Just a reminder to everyone: I will be visiting my sister in Jacksonville beginning next week. I will be at the Missouri game (after finding out that it is homecoming, I figured that I had better do alumni band before I get too old to do it), and I'm going to the Jaguars game the following day. This means a couple of things: I cannot guarantee that I will do scores and capsule analysis for the next three weeks after this weekend (I am returning home on October 23). It depends upon the plans that I make with my sister and her family. The first week in particular, nothing will probably get done until Sunday evening or Monday morning, if at all. Also, the late west coast games will be ending at 1 AM my time instead of 10 PM, so same day analysis probably won't happen.
