A culture of hazing within the football program that has apparently gone on for a number of years. An early sanction of two weeks suspension without pay for head coach Pat Fitzgerald is apparently being reconsidered as not being stringent enough after further evaluation. Northwestern to reconsider Fitzgerald penalty amid hazing probe(A) former player, who asked to remain anonymous, told The Daily Northwestern that sexualized hazing activities took place in the team's locker room. One common practice, called "running," involved a younger player being restrained while eight to 10 older players engaged in a sexualized act in the locker room. Versions of "running" took place during certain portions of the year, including Thanksgiving and Christmas.
"It's a shocking experience as a freshman to see your fellow freshman teammates get ran, but then you see everybody bystanding in the locker room," the former player told The Daily Northwestern. "It's just a really abrasive and barbaric culture that has permeated throughout that program for years on end now."

Look, I've been around the block, but there are so many questions. First, how do football players, manly men and all that, engage in sexual acts with other players? Second, I was going to ask WTF running is, but I found a Sporting News article that was a lot less genteel than ESPN, and I'm not sure the running thing (some kind of dry humping a naked player) was the worst! How does this stuff get started, and who the hell passes it on, year after year? It's pretty unbelievable, TBH. Yay Wildcats, yay...

Several things have come out on both sides of the issue. An investigation apparently revealed that the allegations can be largely corroborated. There was also a report that a former player told ESPN that the player who made the initial allegation bragged that he was going to "bring down" Coach Pat Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald reportedly told investigators that he largely stays out of the locker room because it "belongs to the players". If this is true, we may have found the problem. Fitzgerald is responsible for the general oversight of the program, which includes preparation and supervision of the players within it. If players know that no one will ever check in, things like this can get started and be perpetuated over a period of time.
Especially within the Big Ten, after what happened at Penn State you would believe that member schools would be especially vigilant.

Fitzgerald was fired this morning. There was no realistic way to rescue the situation with him in place. Two years into a ten year contract. That is a lot of money left on the table for a textbook case of lack of institutional control.

The firing was not "with cause"?

It gets even worse. Northwestern just fired baseball coach Jim Foster after discovery of "bullying and a toxic environment" within the baseball program.
If the AD isn't toast already, he should be very soon.

These are probably made up by some mama's boy who is afraid to get dry humped or run a gauntlet of naked teammates while get sprayed by a hose and is trying to get out front of it. Soft ass generation.

Are there any freshmen transfer statistics for Northwestern vs. the national average of roster attrition? Fuck that. I would have been on the freeway back to work at Home Depot for the fall before summer camp even started.

I don't know about freshmen specifically, but they have had a bunch of players enter the portal.

I'd do the same, but not before putting the school on blast about the gay antics going on in the macho man locker room. The locker room that is "for the players", and the coach doesn't enter there. Seriously, who watched the gay porn fantasy video and said, "HEY GUYS, I HAVE A NEW TEAM BUILDING RITUAL FOR THE PROUD NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY"? RG

RG This is definitely the most homo erotic thing in sports since the 2007 World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. I’m guessing there was an upper classman somewhere along the way who spent time in juvi and brought in some hazing rituals, some of which are almost as gay as what was experienced in the end zone in Jacksonville that day.

The hits just keep on coming. Ex-Northwestern players hire Ben Crump, Chicago firm in hazing case Eight former Northwestern football players have retained noted civil rights attorney Ben Crump and a Chicago-based law firm to pursue legal action against the school for hazing incidents that took place within the program.
Crump and the Levin & Perconti firm say they have discovered "a vast array of incidents of abuse" within the Northwestern program.
In a news release, the Levin & Perconti firm stated that it expects more former Northwestern players to join the legal action, which is likely to expand with other college programs. The bolded part is important. Northwestern won't be standing alone when this ends.

Maybe Mo, but let's face it those lawyers WANT it to expand so they get the big bucks, and more and more.

A new article that states that the hazing issues at NU go beyond just football and baseball. Apparently some women's sports as well (softball, volleyball). Attorney says Northwestern hazing existed within athletic program"This is a civil rights issue for me," said Crump, who said 50 former Northwestern athletes -- male and female -- have spoken to the law firm. "Because I think these players have the right to be respected and valued and not hazed, intimidated and retaliated."
