“Kind of up in the air,” he said. “I can’t imagine the fact that Florida has 2 Big Ten quarterbacks to pick from, from the days of Steve Spurrier. I hear, and what little I’ve seen, we don’t get to see much anymore. He’s efficient. He’s a better player than people give him credit for. I think Nick Saban had him in there for a while at Tuscaloosa recruiting him. … He’s an efficient quarterback from what I know. He’s not going to probably beat you deep, or over the middle with 30 receptions. But remember, you guys have been around long enough to remember the term field general, right? The guy who knows how to run a game. That’s what I’m getting.” www.saturdaydownsouth.com/florida-football/florida-insider-assesses-graham-mertz-at-florida-describes-him-as-field-general/"Efficient QB from what I know." He was 7th in the Big 10 in passer rating, 9th in QBR, 6th in YPA, 9th in completion percentage, 5th in TDs, and tied for 3rd in INTs. He managed that level of extreme efficiency playing a Big 10 schedule that had to climb the mountain of playing exactly 1 ranked team. I told my friend from Wisconsin that insider analysis and he couldn't stop laughing. All that aside, I think the term field general has been used to describe 90% of Heisman winners in the last 20 years so I'm feeling good.

He's not gonna beat you deep, or over the middle, or with his legs, he's basically a ninja he's gonna beat you and you won't even know how.

If he can't throw deep or over the middle and he can't run, that leaves screens and sideline patterns - the kind of stone age offense that got Will Muschamp fired and left us incapable of signing offensive skill players.
I have seen the end of this movie already.

It's Mertzday: 247sports.com/longformarticle/sec-football-2023-preseason-qb-rankings-topped-by-arkansas-kj-je-212466204/#219289514. GRAHAM MERTZ, FLORIDA Right now, the buy-in price is low on Graham Mertz among other SEC projected starting quarterbacks this summer. The question you have to ask yourself is this: Is that a result of Florida's stock taking a nose dive under Billy Napier, who's at 5.5 projected wins this season, or are the jeers primarily aimed at Mertz and some of the inconsistencies as a passer shown at Wisconsin during three seasons as the Badgers' starter? Those at Florida aren't nearly as worried about Mertz and production at the quarterback position as others seem to be because the Gators are going to rely on their offensive line and backfield to handle much of the load. At his best, Mertz could be a 20-touchdown guy. And that would mean Florida gets back to bowl season. I don't know about you guys but the thought of Graham Mertz back there "field generaling" and slinging it out into the flat has got me Fing pumped. I'm so fired up right now that if I saw an open door I'd walk right through that sumbitch. Slowly.

20 passing touchdowns at most? Danny Wuerffel averaged 20 passing touchdowns in his first two seasons. As I recall, that worked out pretty, pretty, well for us on our way to two SEC Championships (not to be confused with the SEC East Championship trophy). Sure he split reps with Terry Dean and didn’t play in all of the games, but it happened. I’m sure Graham Mertz will explode in years 3 and 4 just like Danny did… Anyway, it doesn’t matter when you don’t record your first passing touchdown until week 4. We don’t need a QB, only a field general. Just Give him that stupid baton thing we have on the sidelines and let him general it up. I’m sure if we squint really hard and watch the tv through the mirror, #15 will look much like Tebow the way he used to be a game manager back there.

Tebow was a game manager. He managed it by taking the whole game on his shoulders and running&passing it into to the endzone.

Those at Florida aren't nearly as worried about Mertz and production at the quarterback position as others seem to be because the Gators are going to rely on their offensive line and backfield to handle much of the load. One only need look at the Oregon State game to see what happens when a team knows that the Gators are going to run most of the time. As I recall, we were well into the fourth quarter with less than 100 yards of total offense, and we came within less than a minute of being shut out by the fifth place team in the Pacific 12. I was watching a video on YouTube last night of every interception return for a touchdown in FBS in 2022. Our boy Mertz made an appearance, don't recall who the opponent was.
