“You know,” Mullen said, “if you had to associate me with coaching somewhere, you say, ‘Hey, where’s, you know, what is your school? What is your school that you coached at?’ I’d say Mississippi State. That would be the school I would claim.”
You know what Dan, we that bleed Orange and Blue, we are good with that.

What a douchenozzle. Even without Wilson's theatrics, we could still have lost to LSU. The game may well have gone to overtime. He is also conveniently forgetting the way that the conference season ended, with us getting routed on the road by a South Carolina team starting a third string quarterback.
The New York Jets ought to be calling any day now.

The New York Jets ought to be calling any day now. Lots of interest out there. He's open for business. Don't want anybody to think he's married to the Oconee High offensive coordinator gig, if, I mean when, the NFL comes calling with head coaching jobs he'll listen.

Dan Mullen's greatest accomplishment as a head coach was hiring Brian Johnson.
His greatest accomplishment as an OC (ie. glorified babysitter of Urban's offense) was being the coordinator right before Addazzio and back when Urban actually cared/paid attention rather than resting on his laurels and groping women.

Nice juxtaposition on the timeline here. Dan Mullen, who wouldn't give Anthony Fvcking Richardson a chance, is sitting on his ass right now, probably taking credit for AR being named the starter of the NFL Indianapolis Colts. Even if he's not taking credit, he is an enormous asshole for not giving A Fing R a chance. That is all. I feel better now.

Per Dan Mullen, AR's position in the draft and his starting role in Indy just further guarantee that Emory Jones will be next year consciences #1 overall in the NFL draft!

There were plenty of people, including some on this very board, that really thought Emory Jones was the better option til the bitter end. I never understood why. Same with Franks. People just really wanted it to happen when it very clearly wasn’t happening..

People just really wanted it to happen when it very clearly wasn’t happening.. Whenever there is discussion about two (or more) quarterbacks, people tend to take sides. After watching both, even with limited playing time it seemed to me that Anthony Richardson's raw skills were otherworldly. Yes, his inexperience would show at times (see Kentucky last year), but there was no questioning his potential. One of his best games was against Utah in the opener. They had no answer for him. Going back to the season before, just a guess, but AR probably would not have run up the middle for no gain on the two point conversion attempt against Alabama with the game on the line.

There were plenty of people, including some on this very board, that really thought Emory Jones was the better option til the bitter end. I never understood why. Same with Franks. People just really wanted it to happen when it very clearly wasn’t happening.. I was guilty of this myself until we actually saw them play significant minutes after Trask left and perhaps more importantly Brian Johnson was no longer in the building to do the actual coaching and evaluating. By week 3 of 21 season it was crystal clear who should be taking the snaps and who should look at playing another position. Jones had a nice physical skill set, I think if Johnson had coached him through college he would have been a first round pick (probably a bad selection but he would have had the tape to justify it), but I also have absolutely 0 doubt in my mind that if Johnson had gotten to really work with AR as more than a 3rd/4th string QB he would have won a Heisman and been the consensus 1/1 pick. Hell, it's easy to forget but going into the 2019 season Franks was a fringe Heisman candidate and projected 1st round pick. Not sure it ever would have clicked for him like it did for Trask, but without the injury and with the receiving core from 2020 plus Johnson coaching I would be surprised if Franks makes it down to where Trask got drafted and know he wouldn't have gone outside the first 2 rounds. Short story long: Dan Mullen is an asshole, with Brian Johnson he has success in spite of himself and without Brian Johnson he's as big a train wreck as a head coach as his public persona (which for the life of me I cannot figure out why ESPN is paying him money to be on television) suggests. Brian Johnson is a stud, for my money he's the best QB coach on the planet and may end up in the Mooch/Kyle Shannahan stratosphere. That may be overstating it because Mullen is an asshole and Johnson is not, but I can pull plenty of data to back it up. Basically every QB that has played for Mullen with Johnson has been good and without him have been bad. Those who played for Mullen with and without Johnson were good with him and bad without him. In conclusion: Dan Mullen is an asshole.

Wouldn't be the first questionable coach that ESPN hired to do analysis. I remember Mike Gottfried, who said that Ron Zook would be mentioned among the greats of the game when he left UF, despite the fact that he had fired him as DC from his own staff after one year. We used to jokingly call it the Failed Coaches Society. Mark May wasn't a former coach, but he was walking, talking proof that playing college football doesn't automatically make you good at analysis. I won't go too deeply into RG III, who may well be the worst color guy I have ever heard on a telecast.

My main issue with RG is how he tries to inject "hip" phrases into the telecast, often when they have nothing to do with what is happening on the field.

Those guys all have their shit, but Dan Mullen is just such a smug asshole with no real basis for his arrogance. I cannot for the life of me figure out why anybody likes the guy based on his public persona which is alternately phony and obnoxious. He's the coaching equivalent of being born on 3rd base (Urban's first Power 5 OC) and thinking he hit a triple.

All of the swagger with none of the credentials to back it up. Only difference is Lane actually grew up some, took his lumps, and got another shot. Funny how Mullen is still jobless (as far as coaching goes) and doesn’t seem to be landing any top gigs any time soon.

Lane took the FAU job (the link to his infamous national signing day video is still up here. "Hey, Owl Nation."). Kiffin improved them, coached under Nick Saban and got his own gig again after imploding at USC, supposedly his dream job. Group of Five schools aren't calling Mullen. They even took Jim McElwain after his ridiculous death threat stunt at UF. Maybe nobody wants a Darth Vader press conference after a game.

I can't wait to see what Dan Mullen does on Swamp Kings! He's just so personable and likable. Mississippi State should be proud to call him one of their own.

I just had a thought. Mullen is the quarterback guru, right? Maybe he was right about the New York Jets. They will need somebody to teach Aaron Rodgers how to play quarterback, and who better or more qualified?

Speaking of failed coaches - ESPN has brought back Herm Edwards as an analyst. Edwards was fired at Arizona State not only for losing, but for willful and blatant violation of NCAA rules and perpetuating a culture in which rule violations were encouraged. The penalties against Arizona State are expected to be significant.
Urban Meyer was brought back as a commentator after supporting and retaining a known domestic abuser on his coaching staff at Ohio State. This was followed by a joke of an NFL career that lasted less than one season, including staying behind after his team lost a close road game and getting a lap dance in a nightclub, and allegedly kicking a player in practice.
