QB- Graham Mertz was Graham Mertz. Statline was fine but it's hard to give a passing grade when you're 1-13 on 3rd down, 8-14 for 113 yards in the first half, and score 3 points on multiple redzone trips aside from a jump ball down 21. He made multiple bad reads and started looking at the rush even more than usual. What's weird with Mertz is that when he's on it looks so repeatable, it's not like AR where he'd do things nobody else could. Then it's just gone. That's how he's always been and why he's a coach killer. I'm gonna give him a C+, the + is because he held onto the ball when he got sacked.
RB- Incomplete. Gameplan and play calling didn't seem to account for the whole 4 new starts on the Line and going from the most athletic QB ever (per the combine) with the best arm in the country to pretty much the polar opposite. Both backs did fine in the passing game. I'd like to see them more involved in the passing game by design rather than check downs but whatever.
Offensive Line- tempted to give an incomplete because a lot of the clear problems were created by coaching and QB play in that order, but they sucked, so D-
WR/TE- B+, got some guys who can run and high point and do things in space, hopefully Lagway focuses on that.
D-line: C-, very strange scheme with a back-up QB and missing their best offensive weapon, Prince should NEVER be dropping into coverage, some of the young guys are coming and Freshman led and were tied for 2nd in QB pressures. Am I the only one who can't take his eyes off Watson when he's on the field? There is no reason for him to be out there, every play is the same, the center snaps the ball, takes one step to his right or left, gets under Des who is slowly standing up, holds his ground for like 1.5-2 seconds which is easy enough with the leverage and then disengages because Des has given up. It's even more confusing now that we have some depth and players up front.
LBers: B+, Shemar James is an absolute animal. Future first rounder. This group looked pretty well coached (stood out in that regard) and I didn't see missed assignments. If they had spit the bit even the run the clock offense would have resulted in points.
Secondary: C-, when Utah wanted to throw they did with a couple notable busted assignments (as good as Marshall is somebody still has to be in the middle of the field on the first play from scrimmage). Tackled pretty well. I'm tempted to put this all on the coaching/scheme but you can do that with anything. Seem to be more athletic (given that we had the two slowest DBs at last year's combine the bar was low), need to work on eye discipline etc, backup QBs should not be able to confuse you like that when you've had 8 months to prepare.
Special teams- F as in fucktarded
Coaching- F-----------, Napier is trying to prove what worked in the Sunbelt can/will work at UF. If he's determined to die on that hill we should put him out of his misery sooner than later because there's not enough talent in the world to overcome coaching that shitty. We've got 2 Offensive line coaches, no QB coach, and the guy in charge of our special teams is called the "GameChanger coordinator," for those of you with kids in youth baseball or softball that's not the guy running the app, it's an actual position in charge of a unit on the team. He is not allowed to be on the field during games but what can you do down there? Armstrong seemed to try to out-think the room. When you've got a guy with a 1-3 round grade as an edge rusher, here's a wild idea: rush him! The first time or two I saw Prince in coverage I figured it was an attempt to give a different look to a QB who hasn't played much. I was wrong. Patrick Toney without the beard was trying to show people he's a big boy coach. Even with that I think he had the best performance of our staff last week. Nowhere to go but up. Go Gators.
