Couple things that I found interesting/telling:
1) Desmond Watson played 21 snaps. 3rd most snaps amongst the Line. He was so inconsequential that didn't even list him in the boxscore. Let's go in the way back machine to when a young less big Des set foot on campus shall we?:
Watson has to shed some weight and tighten up his frame, but if there is one strength and conditioning coach who can do wonders in that department, it's Nick Savage.
The Sunshine State native is already an intriguing athlete for someone who tips the scales at 6-foot-5, 350-plus, but he will be even more light-footed and agile following several months in Gainesville. Watson fits Todd Grantham's scheme like a glove and will have the opportunity to wreak havoc over the center. florida.rivals.com/news/signing-day-capsule-four-star-defensive-tackle-desmond-watson
That's right boys and girls, "Big Des" needed to lose weight when he came in at 350. 4 years in he is listed at 439 which is down from the 449 he weighed in at in the Spring. For anybody wondering losing 10 lbs. in 5 months including both Spring and Fall camps when you weigh 450 is preposterous. Seriously, do you realize how much you have to eat to even do that? That's like a normal sized person working out 3-5 hours a day and still losing less than 1 pound per month. The Base Metabolic Rate for a 77 inch 450 lbs. man is 3700 cals. If he sleeps all day and does not eat he burns 3700 calories. I would think that the activity level with practice and lifting at least doubles that. Gaining 100 lbs. when your only job for 3 years has been to get in shape and then only losing 10 lbs. in 5 months means at a bare minimum he is eating 7k calories. I'm guessing most of that is not at the training table. Aside from fact that he's an ineffective player against any semblance of talent on the interior offensive line, what message does that send? We're limiting snaps for McLelland (16 snaps), Searcy (15), and Collins (8). Collins led the team in QB pressures (3) and was our highest rated recruit last year. Searcy had 2 pressures and 3 tackles. Will Norman didn't play and he was a top 100 guy last year. Nevermind the fact that those guys can leave at the drop of a hat, what's the messaging to current players and recruits? Older guys play and it doesn't matter how hard you work or how seriously you take conditioning if you have a cool nickname you get to keep running out there? Seriously, what the fuck is going on? There has to be a method to the madness. Right?
2) The only guy who was the primary play caller that has won a championship in the BCS era is Jimbo Fisher in 2013. Unless you count Pete Carroll who called the Defense for that professional team in Los Angeles in 2003. It's a dead horse at this point but there is absolutely no reason for Napier to be calling plays. None.
I'm going to set the bar really low for RDB this year: Don't turn into a joke. If you do the class will fall apart, more guys will leave in the portal, and it will be time to hit the road. He's well on his way, but there's time to turn it around. Correcting those 2 issues would go a long way to proving he's a real SEC football coach. I think he can correct them fairly easily, but first he has to acknowledge them, and it seems he does not want to.
