Florida 49, McNeese 7 - At least we have proven that we can run against a team with inferior talent. The Gators had 560 yards total offense, with 327 of that on the ground. Interesting that of the quarterbacks who appeared in the game yesterday, Jack Miller wasn't one of them.
Texas 34, Alabama 24 - I watched this game from start to finish, and it was plain from the outset that Texas was the better team. Gone are the days when Alabama's offensive and defensive lines imposed their will on opponents. The Tide was held to two field goals in the first half, the last coming on the final play of the half. Alabama led only once, 16-13 after a touchdown with 14 seconds remaining in the third quarter. In the fourth, a pivotal play with Texas leading by three and going for it on fourth and one near midfield. The plan was for a quarterback sneak. The quarterback never controlled the snap, and a running back alertly picked the ball up and ran left for just enough for the first down. Neither team rushed for much, with both barely over 100 yards. The Longhorns passed for 349 yards.
Georgia 45, Ball State 3 - After a scoreless first quarter, the Bulldogs put up 31 points in the second and the rout was on. Georgia only managed 99 yards rushing. At least the Cardinals have the Bronze Stalk Trophy game coming up. Mark your calendars for November 7.
Tennessee 30, Austin Peay 13 - A pedestrian effort for the Vols. It was 3-3 after one quarter and 13-6 Tennessee at the half. The Governors actually had more first downs 19-17, and more passing yardage 260-228.
LSU 72, Grambling 10 - The Tigers led 14-10 after one quarter, then the suspense was over. A 28-point second quarter blew the game open.
Ole Miss 37, Tulane 20 - The Rebels scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to break open a game that was 17-17 after three quarters. The Rebels were a Gatoresque 1/13 on third down conversions.
Miami 48, Texas A&M 33 - The Aggies were on the fringe of the top 25 going in (#23). Three turnovers hurt A&M. The Canes passed for 374 yards, including touchdown passes of 52 and 64 yards. Miami also had a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown after A&M had cut the Miami lead to 21-20 with a field goal.
Wake Forest 36, Vanderbilt 20 - The Commodores trailed throughout. They got to within three points twice in the first half, but they were down 33-14 before scoring their final points. Vandy turned the ball over three times.
Kentucky 28, Eastern Kentucky 17 - The Colonels led 7-0 after one quarter, and it was 7-7 at the half. The Wildcats gained some separation with a 14-point third quarter.
Arkansas 28, Kent State 6 - The Golden Flashes managed only two first half field goals. They led 3-0 early, then trailed 7-6 in the second quarter before surrendering a touchdown with 2:20 remaining in the half.
Missouri 23, Middle Tennessee 19 - The Blue Raiders led 7-3 in the second quarter until the Tigers scored a touchdown with 24 seconds remaining in the half. Mizzou hung on after taking a 23-10 lead seven seconds into the fourth quarter.
Mississippi State 31, Arizona 24, OT - The Wildcats might have won this game going away had they not turned the ball over five times. Arizona tied the game at 24 on a field goal with five seconds remaining in regulation.
South Carolina 47, Furman 21 - After a 7-7 first quarter, 20 points in the second by the Gamecocks removed any suspense. Furman led twice, 7-0 and 14-7. SC had 571 yards total offense, including 463 yards passing.
Auburn 14, California 10 - I watched as much of this game as I could stand. Offensive ineptitude on both sides. The two teams combined for just over 500 yards total offense. A Tiger touchdown with 6:30 remaining was the only scoring in the second half. The Golden Bears led 10-7 at halftime, and they had a field goal on the final play of the half wiped out by a holding penalty, which took them out of field goal range.
National games
North Carolina 40, Appalachian State 34, OT - Both teams had leads in each of the first three quarters. The Mountaineers tied the game at 27 with a field goal with 1:22 remaining in regulation. After the teams traded touchdowns in the first OT, the Tarheels scored the only points in the second.
Boston College 31, Holy Cross 28 - After losing in overtime to Northern Illinois last week, the Eagles struggled to beat the FCS Crusaders. Next up for BC, Florida State comes to town.
James Madison 36, Virginia 35 - The Cavaliers' first home game since the tragic shooting deaths of three players following an educational field trip last November. The three players were honored before the game. Running back Mike Hollins, who survived being shot, scored two touchdowns. The Dukes scored the only 12 points of the fourth quarter, the final six on a ten yard touchdown pass with 55 seconds remaining. Virginia had two chances to pull the game out in the final seconds. After the final touchdown, JMU tried a two point conversion. A screen pass to the right was nearly intercepted and could have been returned for two points. On the final play, the receiver going down the right sideline beat his cover man, but the pass was overthrown.
Rice 43, Houston 41, 2OT - We are used to the Cougars hanging big points on the Owls. We aren't used to Rice keeping up. The Cougars had to rally from a 28-7 halftime deficit to tie the game with a 21-point fourth quarter, the final score coming with 15 seconds remaining. The teams traded touchdowns in both overtimes. In the second, Rice made their two point conversion while Houston missed theirs.
Utah 20, Baylor 13 - The Utes scored 14 points in the final two minutes to pull out a victory in Waco. The final touchdown was set up by a pass interception.
Oregon 38, Texas Tech 30 - The Ducks came from behind in Lubbock with a 20 point fourth quarter. After Oregon took a 31-30 lead on a 34-yard field goal with 1:10 remaining, they got a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown with 35 seconds left.
Colorado 36, Nebraska 14 - The Buffaloes totally dominated the Cornhuskers in their home opener. Nebraska trailed 23-7 at the half and it was game over. Their only other points came on a four yard touchdown pass on the final play. CU had 454 yards total offense, including 396 passing.
Purdue 24, Virginia Tech 17 - The Hokies' points all came in the second quarter. The game was 17-17 at the half. Purdue scored the only points of the second half on a two yard TD run with eight minutes left.
Washington State 31, Wisconsin 22 - The Cougars almost totally blew a 24-6 lead, with the Badgers getting to within 24-22 after a 13-0 third quarter. A fourth quarter TD run with 5:30 remaining sealed it.
Central Florida 18, Boise State 16 - A 55-yard field goal as time expired won it for the Golden Knights on the road. The Broncos are now 0-2.
Fresno State 34, Eastern Washington 31, 2OT - It took the Bulldogs two overtimes to put away the FCS Eagles (with the famous red field, which I have seen in person). Eastern outscored Fresno 21-10 in the second half to send the game to OT at 24-24. After the teams traded touchdowns in the first OT, a Fresno field goal was the only points in the second.
Oklahoma State 27, Arizona State 15 - The Cowboys shut out the Sun Devils in the second half after trailing 15-10 at the break.
