www.gatorcountry.com/feature/floridas-snap-count-report-vs-tennessee/Here's something I did not think I'd be saying at this point: Austin Armstrong appears to be a really good coach. He's like the anti-Patrick Toney even though he looks like him sans beard. What I really like, no what I fucking love, is comparing this to the snap count against Utah. Armstrong is doing this crazy thing where he adjusts based on performance and is adjusting players rolls based on their strengths and weaknesses. I missed the first 5-7 minutes of the game because I was coaching, but Prince was not running around in coverage that I saw, McLellan's snaps have more than doubled, Desmond's have been cut in half, and Collins/Searcy are splitting snaps ast Edge. We've zeroed in on the best players regardless of class, given them their assignments, and let them go. It has to be harder to hold ground against a relatively fresh Desmond after you've actually had to move to try to block Jackson and Banks (who aren't small by any means but still have some agility and play with a little leverage versus just bull rushing). The bar is exceedingly low since at least Durkin and maybe Quinn, but that's probably the most encouraging thing from last night.

I know I've been impressed with Armstrong and really did not expect it. At all. Credit where credit is due!

Our D line has potential to be downright nasty if these kids keep getting game reps. Having a 2 deep situation on the D line is really tough to compete against.

Dez actually got to the quarterback and disrupted a throw which was intercepted. This may be a byproduct of what you are talking about.

There was at least one moment where a late breaking safety caused the Tennessee quarterback to think he had more time on the play clock than he did and forced the Vols to burn a time out. The announcers specifically pointed it out and praised Armstrong for using player movement to mess with the QB's head.

Yeah he seems good at the little things and ADJUSTING (it's a crazy concept but just might work, maybe one day we'll hire an OC and/or Special Teams Coach and try it in the other 2 phases, a gal can dream), but another thing I really like, largely because it distinguishes him from his bearded doppleganger from last year is that his position group, linebackers, has made far and away the biggest improvement from 2022. No disrespect to Miller and Burney who were both solid players, hard workers, and true Gators, but James and Williams are running laps around them with much less experience. Williams went from 4th string Edge rusher who didn't record a stat last year to arguably our best defensive player against Tennessee at MLB. Last year our safeties (Toney's group) were both 8th year seniors and were both better under Todd Grantham when they were only bad as opposed to terrible. It's early and he's young, and like pretty much everything the bar is really low, but so far he's a lot more Quinn/Durkin/Strong/Collins than Shannon/Grantham/Toney.
