Congratulations, Miami. Needing only to take a knee to seal a win, instead they ran the ball and lost a fumble. They were beaten on a touchdown bomb at the end by a very pedestrian Georgia Tech team in front of a home crowd. Oregon ought to send them a thank you card for taking Mario Cristobal.
I apologize for bailing on game summaries this week. After crossing three time zones and having my sleep patterns ten kinds of screwed up, I just wasn't up to it this weekend. I flew back on Saturday and we landed just before the Vandy game kicked off.
Notre Dame lost and Oklahoma knocked off Texas, so it was a good week overall. That the winning score in Dallas came with 16 seconds left when Texas was convinced that they had the game won made it that much more gratifying. I had the Texas radio feed, so I got to witness the sheer deflation. Hook 'em, indeed.

It doesn't matter how many 5 stars you get if this is how you coach on game day. You can't recruit your way out of this kind of stuff.

It doesn't matter how many 5 stars you get if this is how you coach on game day. You can't recruit your way out of this kind of stuff. It's the Ron Zook Effect. Poor strategy can overcome any talent advantage that you may have over an opponent. I wonder if Miami learned more than they would have had they won the game.

To paraphrase my old engineer buddy, talent is necessary, but not sufficient, for success at the major college level. But it's still necessary!, something that Dan Mullen didn't get.
Edited to add that you need all three phases of operational excellence: Talent, Gameday Coaching, and of course Steady Hair.

This may be the choke of the decade. Cristobal had received a B+ which tied for 4th amongst year 2 coaches going into that game, I have to think this flushes that and takes him down to the land of the sub C where only RDB and Brent Pry existed on Friday when this article came out. I'm trying to remember a coach who bounced back from this level of brain fart but can't off the top of my head. This is pretty epic. Here' the article if you have ESPN+ www.espn.com/college-football/insider/story/_/id/38500016/grading-second-year-college-football-coaches

Perhaps the only bigger choke that I can recall involves UNLV, usually a football afterthought. In 1999, the Rebels played a road game at Baylor. Leading by three with the ball inside the UNLV five yard line, the Bears decided to try to punch in a touchdown instead of taking a knee on the final play. The RB fumbled, and UNLV returned it for a touchdown to win the game.

Big Dumb Mario the overrated Oaf found a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Best part is the stadium was only 80% filled...... in the lower bowl and practically empty in the upper sections lol, while scUM had one of their more important recruiting weekends!!
