Believe them. I think at this point we have enough data to have a pretty good gauge of what RDB is, it's been 20 years since he started coaching and 15 since his first (albeit short) gig as an OC. He won't hire a QB Coach, Offensive Coordinator, or Special Teams coach, and he wouldn't have made a switch at DC but Toney left so he got someone younger with an even shorter resume. He seems to aspire to be Saban or Smart when he grows up, so he tries to talk like them with slight variations and copies the approach but in his mind ups the ante by having even more betterer infrastructure. He seems to miss out on the whole discipline thing with 450 lbs. guys who continually gain weight when told to lose weight continuing to get snaps. We have the fattest team in the nation, including over 200 lbs. of excess weight in our 3 deep at one position. But I digress.
There's so much outside noise and bullshit out there, so take all of that stuff out and at the end of the day success as the head coach at UF comes down to the answer of 2 basic questions:
1) Can you assemble a roster that is better than at least 90% of your schedule and 85% of the SEC (in the 12 team playoff world )? Honestly even this isn't idiot proof but it's close enough that if you can't win with the better roster you'll be let go and your successor will have a full cupboard.
2) If you can't accomplish #1 can you (and/or your staff) can you out coach the guys with better rosters?
If the answer to both those questions is no, we need a different coach. I'd make a run at Deion (who can definitely do 1 and I believe can do 2), Brian Johnson (who can do 2 and I believe can do 1), and Tim Tebow with experienced coordinators like Charlie Strong (I have no idea what he can do as a coach but wouldn't bet against him and it would make us nationally relevant again).
As a compromise, because RDB has some likable qualities, I used to find him likable but his nonsensical doublespeak, insecurity when making hires, and now lack of accountability/throwing players under the bus has lost me, I suppose we could do what Notre Dame did with Brian Kelly. You could basically say "you can stay but here's your staff, good news it includes a QB coach and OC as well as a Special teams coach with Power 5 success and they're going to call plays so you can oversee the whole deal for consistency and sustainability and so forth and also keep talking to recruits, although we did have to let go 5 analysts in charge of uniform cleanliness, locker room aromatics, latrine usage, dental hygiene, and hydration monitoring." If he was smart he'd stay, if his "unwavering confidence in his system" is such that it is an affront to his authority he can feel free to go and see if any other big time program wants in on the RDB experience and/or land back in the Sunbelt.
Of course this is all a pipe dream because it would require an AD with testicular fortitude or a President that cares to take a look at the single biggest revenue producer the University has.
