SEC
Arkansas 39, Florida 36, OT - I put this one on the defense. The offense played well enough to win the game, but giving up 33 points in regulation to a team who could only manage three against Mississippi State is beyond comprehension. Special teams were once again an issue, as the field goal unit was running onto the field as the offense was about to run a play. Napier blamed this on a player who he has designated to send the field goal team onto the field. Florida had 27 more passing yards, but Arkansas dominated everything else, outrushing the Gators 226-112. This seems to all but ensure that there will be no bowl game during a time when most of FBS plays in one.
Alabama 42, LSU 28 - This game was back and forth early, and it was 21-21 at the half. Alabama gained an advantage in the fourth quarter 35-28, and sealed the win with the only points of the fourth quarter. Pretty even game statistically. The Alabama defense was the difference maker, holding LSU to seven points in the second half.
Georgia 30, Missouri 21 - Tied 10-10 at the half. The Dawgs' 14-3 advantage in the third quarter gave them the separation that they needed. The Tigers' two turnovers didn't help. Mizzou closed to within 24-21 in the fourth quarter but did not score again.
Ole Miss 38, Texas A&M 35 - The Rebels led 28-14 after scoring the first points of the second half. The Aggies took a 35-31 lead with 4:34 remaining, but the Rebels took the lead for good with 1:40 remaining. A&M missed a potential tying field goal on the final play.
Tennessee 59, Connecticut 3 - That the Vols had three defensive touchdowns tells you all that you need to know about this total mismatch.
South Carolina 38, Jacksonville State 28 - The battle of Gamecocks vs. Gamecocks was tight throughout. JSU took a 28-21 lead with 5:40 remaining in the third quarter, but they were outscored 17-0 the rest of the way.
Auburn 31, Vanderbilt 15 - It wasn't this close, because it was 31-7 in the third quarter. Neither team scored in the fourth. The Commodores had 266 yards total offense.
Kentucky 24, Mississippi State 3 - It would appear that the Bulldogs have replaced Arkansas as the SEC's most inept offense. MSU had 218 yards of total offense. It was 21-3 at the half.
National games
Washington 52, Southern California 42 - The most points scored against the Trojans in school history, cementing Alex Grinch's status as the worst defensive coordinator I have ever seen. The Huskies took advantage of a Caleb Williams fumble late in the second quarter, adding a touchdown before the half that gave them a 35-28 lead. QB Michael Penix threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns, while RB Dillon Johnson ran for 256 yards and four touchdowns.
Clemson 31, Notre Dame 23 - The Tigers jumped on the Irish early, leading 24-9 at the half. ND had three turnovers, one an interception returned 28 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter with Clemson leading 17-6.
Texas 33, Kansas State 30, OT - Kansas State should have won this game. The Longhorns led 27-7 in the third quarter. The Wildcats rallied to tie the game at 27 with 12:37 remaining. They inexplicably went for two with the game tied and did not make it. Had they just kicked the extra point, their field goal with one second remaining would have won the game instead of tying it. They also went for a touchdown on fourth down from the four yard line in overtime with Texas up three and did not make it. Poor coaching decisions cost them dearly.
Oklahoma State 27, Oklahoma 24 - The Cowboys won the last scheduled meeting in the nation's second longest continuous rivalry (only Minnesota and Wisconsin have played more consecutive games). The game wasn't without controversy. With Oklahoma trailing 27-21, on third and goal, an Oklahoma State defender tackled the Oklahoma receiver in the end zone with the ball in the air. It fell at his feet, so it was definitely catchable. No call. Oklahoma was forced to settle for a field goal, and they never got the ball back.
Arizona 24, UCLA 10 - The Bruins were outgained 429-271. Once the Wildcats started scoring, UCLA never got closer than 14-7. Arizona is quietly 6-3, with games against Colorado, Utah and Arizona State remaining. They could easily finish 8-4 after a 5-7 season last year. They lost to USC by two points in three overtimes, and they lost a seven point game to Washington, who just rolled USC.
Army 23, Air Force 3 - Six turnovers killed any chance for the Falcons to extend their undefeated record. They were an outside contender for the college football playoff, and the best team in the Mountain West Conference.
North Carolina State 20, Miami 6 - At least we won't be taking any crap off Hurricane fans (all five of them). Miami managed only two first half field goals. NC State wasn't much better, as the game was 10-6 in the fourth quarter before they put it away with the last ten points. Miami plays Florida State in Tallahassee next week.
Tulane 13, East Carolina 10 - The ranked Green Wave struggled with the Pirates on the road. It was 10-10 at the half and Tulane scored the only points of the second half with a field goal less than a minute into the fourth quarter.
UAB 45, Florida Atlantic 42 - The Blazers led 28-14 at the half, but here came the Owls (Hey, Owl Nation). FAU took a 42-35 lead with 11:43 left, but a 26 yard field goal with three seconds remaining beat them. UAB had 614 of the 1,098 yards of total offense (about five games' worth for Mississippi State).
Houston 25, Baylor 24, OT - Not much scoring. The Cougars led 7-0 at the half. The Bears scored a touchdown with 29 seconds remaining to send the game to OT tied at 17. In the overtime, Houston went for the win after Baylor scored a touchdown and kicked the extra point. They made the two point conversion.
Central Florida 28, Cincinnati 26 - All hail, champions of the universe, the UCF Golden Knights with their first win in the Big 12. After UCF took a 28-20 lead in the fourth quarter, the Bearcats scored on a six yard run with 1:27 remaining, but the two point conversion failed.
Indiana 20, Wisconsin 14 - The 2-6 Hoosiers led 17-7 at the half in the most improbable game in the Big Ten, other than...
Michigan State 20, Nebraska 17 - ...this. The Matt Rhule Miracle doesn't appear to be one so far. MSU was so hapless that I assumed that they would get buried in all of their remaining games. Not so fast, corn breath. Neither team broke 300 yards total offense, although the Spartans were within five yards of it. Three turnovers doomed Nebraska. The only saving grace for them is that the game was in East Lansing.
Iowa 10, Northwestern 7 - Neither team scored, or even visited the red zone, in the first half.
Stanford 10, Washington State 7 - Not to be outdone by the Big Ten in producing sheer boredom, the (soon-to-be late) Pacific 12 produced this gem. The Cougars dominated the first half 7-0, while the Cardinal ruled after halftime 10-0. A whopping 462 yards of total offense - total. WSU had four yards rushing on 24 attempts, a stellar 0.2 yards per carry. Sounds like the Florida-Oregon State game last year.
Illinois 27, Minnesota 26 - The Gophers seemingly had the game won, leading 26-21 with the Illini quarterback injured. The backup QB threw a 46-yard touchdown pass with 51 seconds remaining to stun the crowd in Minneapolis.
Coastal Carolina 28, Old Dominion 24 - The Chanticleers rallied from 21-13 down in the fourth quarter, scoring the clinching points on a 14-yard touchdown pass with 23 seconds remaining.
