Normally among the top teams in the Mountain West, San Diego State sits tied for last place in the conference at 1-6 in league play. The absolute lowest point of their season was a 6-0 loss at home to dreadful Nevada, who the Aztecs sit in a tie with at the bottom of the league. Their three wins this season are a four point win over Ohio of the MAC, an eight point win over FCS Idaho State, and a seven point win over Hawaii, their lone win in conference.
The Aztecs have a new stadium, which they are having problems drawing people to because the team is so bad. It has been a rocky 12 months for the program. They told the Mountain West Conference that they intended to leave, then they wound up rescinding the request when the anticipated invitation from the Pacific 12 didn't come (in retrospect, that may have been a blessing). Also, according to two players on the team, there is no accountability. Nobody is holding players accountable for making it to workouts or improving academically.
I suspect that this will be one of the entries in the college coaching carousel, if not before the end of the season then shortly after it ends.
