Probably the most prominent name mentioned in connection with the vacant Texas A&M job. Oregon coach Dan Lanning says no chance he'll leave Ducks"Everything I want exists right here," Lanning told reporters Monday night. "I'm not going anywhere. There's zero chance that I would be coaching somewhere else. I've got unfinished business here. ... We have the resources, the tools, anybody that can't understand why you would want to be at this place, doesn't understand exactly what exists here.

As soon as I hear the name Dan lanning my eyes gloss over. So overrated, but Nike machine gonna Nike machine. See Nix, Bo. I will give lanning credit for one thing, he’s not stupid. Why leave Oregon where you have the most resources in your region because of the swoosh and go try to coach and recruit against Texas with things clicking under Sark, Oklahoma in the SEC, as well as your mentors/heroes in Saban and Kirby? No reason to do it. Especially since the top 2-4 teams from big 10 will be in the playoff so you’ve got margin of error there that you don’t have in the SEC.

I agree with all you say Taps. I will say that Dan Lanning looks to be the best Oregon HC since Chip Kelly though. The Nike money and lack of true competitive programs in that region of the US are a major help for any Oregon HC, but Lanning seems a tad different. Despite being a defensive guy he doesnt appear to be anti offense like many former DCs that become HCs are (Ex. Muschamp).
In terms of Oregon, that's one of my biggest arguments with scUM fans who praise Mario Cristobal as this great recruiter. Why? Because he had Nike money at a school that had little to no competition on the West Coast? Because like Napier he had on a Bama polo before that and signed players to play at Bama (like every Bama assistant)? or because for 1 recruiting cycle John Ruiz pumped a bunch of funny money in scUM?
Not hard to recruit in those scenarios, especially at Oregon. I hope Lanning stays at Oregon for a while and he probably will for all the reasons you mentioned. But if Napier doesn't work out, id most likely have him on the HC Candidates list.

I hear you and objectively see why UF would give him a look. Subjectively if I never hear another "pro" of a potential hire as being somehow connected to Saban it will be too soon. At least Cristobal was a recruiting coordinator, offensive line coach, and assistant head coach rather than having his rocket ship to the stars take him from analyst all the way to TE coach like our current leader.
He does seem capable of staying out of the way. Whether he shows he can do that once he gets outside the wonderful world of Pac 12 defenses that turned Bo Nix into a Heisman candidate remains to be seen. I also don't think he beats Saban or especially Smart on any kids on the fence. Why play for the student when you can play for the master? The only guy who has found a solution to that conundrum has won 2 straight nattys and 27 straight games.
I'd love to see Lanning be offered and take the job. It would set him up for failure and take a Kirby disciple off the board if/when we're back in the coaching market. If he takes it he's a fool and I don't want him.
