SEC
Missouri 33, Florida 31 - With the game essentially won, the Gators failed to cover Missouri's best wide receiver on fourth and 17, allowing them to convert which led to the winning field goal. Two turnovers by the offense didn't help, although I can understand one of them, a botched handoff by backup QB Max Brown. With Graham Mertz suffering a collarbone fracture, it's safe to say that we have seen the last of him for 2023. The Tigers passed for 331 yards. It's really a shame that Trevor Etienne is only authorized to play in the second half.
Georgia 38, Tennessee 10 - Although it was just 10-7 Georgia after one quarter, the Bulldogs already had a two touchdown lead by halftime. Tennessee managed only 13 first downs, and converted two of 11 third downs.
Alabama 66, Chattanooga 10 - About as competitive as you might expect.
Ole Miss 35, Louisiana-Monroe 3 - The Rebels led only 7-3 at the half, but broke the game open with a 21-0 third quarter.
LSU 56, Georgia State 14 - The Tigers had 35 points on the board by halftime.
Mississippi State 41, Southern Mississippi 20 - The Bulldogs finally found someone who they could score points on. The Golden Eagles had two turnovers and 11 first downs.
Texas A&M 38, Abilene Christian 10 - The Aggies didn't expend too much effort in dispatching the Wildcats. Abilene's touchdown came on a fumble return that briefly tied the game 7-7.
New Mexico State 31, Auburn 10 - I can't believe that I'm typing this, but the 25-point underdog Aggies dominated the game. Auburn had only 12 first downs. NM State had 213 yards rushing - exactly Auburn's total offense. NM State's first win over an SEC opponent.
Arkansas 44, Florida International 20 - The Golden Panthers led 13-7 after one quarter, but the Razorbacks put up 24 points in the second.
South Carolina 17, Kentucky 14 - About as exciting as the score insinuates. The Gamecocks led 10-0 after the first quarter, but the Wildcats scored seven each in the second and third quarters to lead 14-10. Kentucky had three turnovers.
National games
Louisville 38, Miami 31 - The Cardinals clinched a spot in the ACC title game by breaking a 31-31 tie on a 58 yard touchdown pass with 4:17 remaining. The Hurricanes made it inside the Louisville 10 in the final seconds. but could not score.
UCLA 38, Southern California 20 - Combine three Trojan turnovers with one of the country's worst defenses and this is the end result.
Washington 22, Oregon State 20 - The Huskies scored all of their points in the first half and hung on in Corvallis.
Arizona 42, Utah 18 - Right now, the Wildcats may be the best team in the Pac-12. They led 28-7 at the half and weren't really pushed.
UNLV 31, Air Force 27 - The Rebels ended a six-game losing streak to the Falcons, and reached nine wins for the first time since 1984. They overcame two horrifically bad calls on AFA's last drive to hold them out of the end zone.
New Mexico 25, Fresno State 17 - This was a stunner. The 3-7 Lobos were on the road against the 8-2 Bulldogs. Fresno led 14-3 four minutes into the second quarter, then New Mexico scored the next 22 points. Fresno was outgained 528-230.
Clemson 31, North Carolina 20 - Quite a few turnovers, three for NC and two for Clemson. Nine yards difference in total offense.
Kansas State 31, Kansas 27 - A Wildcat touchdown, the only points of the fourth quarter, decided the game. Four lead changes.
Michigan 31, Maryland 24 - A Terrapin fumble inside their own ten yard line returned for a touchdown turned out to be the difference.
Wisconsin 24, Nebraska 17, OT - The Cornhuskers appeared to be headed for yet another three point loss before kicking a tying 30 yard field goal with four seconds remaining in regulation. The Huskers must beat #16 Iowa, the champions of the Big Ten West, next week to become bowl eligible.
Toledo 32, Bowling Green 31 - The underdog Falcons led 28-10 at the half. The Rockets outscored them 22-3 in the second half to win on the road. Toledo is 10-1 with a road game at Central Michigan remaining. Their only loss of the season was by two points to Illinois in the season opener.
Appalachian State 26, James Madison 23, OT - First loss of the season for the Dukes. JMU had to score a touchdown and make a two point conversion to tie the game with 57 seconds remaining to force overtime. I wonder what role the disappointment of the NCAA's denial of their application for bowl eligibility played in their performance.
