www.saturdaydownsouth.com/sec-football/first-and-10-power-ranking-every-sec-head-coach-entering-2023/"11. Billy Napier, Florida (No. 11 in 2022): At the end of the day, 1 question remains: How much patience does the notoriously impatient Florida fan base have? Because if they’re willing to choke down a few lean years, the payoff can be rich. Recruiting won’t be a problem; Napier is among the elite at it, and the Florida administration finally realizes what it’s going to take to compete with Alabama and Georgia and LSU. But remember this: Will Muschamp recruited better than anyone outside of Saban while at Florida but couldn’t get the quarterback position figured out despite blue-chip recruits (Jeff Driskell, Will Grier). Napier is hands on with the quarterbacks and calls the plays — and might need to give it up if the Graham Mertz experiment fails." So here's the thing, what makes people keep saying the bold part? I was no fan of Will Muschamp as a head coach, but he could recruit, he had results to point to. What results does Napier have? I'm fine being patient (although I think that the whole patience thing is overblown especially with the portal, I can't think of anybody in recent history where they struggled for more than 2 years and/or didn't have tangible recruiting improvements that later made a big jump) but he's gotta actually have some success before we terms like "elite" get thrown around. He's had 2 working on 3 classes: 1) A transition class that ranked 17 accounting for transfers 2) his first full class that ranked 12 3) A class that people seem a little over their skis about given that we're at 11 That's not elite recruiting at the University of Florida, and it certainly doesn't earn you years of futility because you talk a good game. I also find it hilarious that they use they reference elite recruiting and then the "Graham Mertz experiment" in the same paragraph without even sniffing the paradox.

We have the 11th ranked coach in the SEC. Our recruiting class is ranked 11. Spurrier wore #11.
This must be a sign that good things are on the horizon.

I'm hoping that there's only one year 0, but I could see him needing 3 or 4 if he doesn't start recruiting and/or winning.

About this year 0 thing… Is this something that Napier has directly said or is it a phenomenon the media created? Because up to this point, he has done some head scratching things with the staff, lost games we should have won, has not done much on the recruiting trail to convince me improvement is coming, and has spouted off some serious coach speak. However, he has not been one to talk like a loser (e.g. see Ron Zook, Will Muschamp, and Yellow Teeth Jim). Year 0 is a loser term. Winners don’t try to dress up shitty performance. When those types of phrases begin to come out of the head coach’s mouth, that’s when I assume it is the beginning of the end for him.

When those types of phrases begin to come out of the head coach’s mouth, that’s when I assume it is the beginning of the end for him. Trying to find it, but I'm fairly sure that it is a media creation likely put out there by one of Stricklin's minions. Completely agree it's not Napier's style but it screams Stricklin/Foley. To be honest I don't think that Napier would have any real long term problem if he doesn't wind up being the guy at Florida, he's 43, has success as a head coach, and if he fails here he'll probably get another shot as long as he doesn't completely shit the bed. See Kiffin, Strong, Sarkisian, etc. Hell after getting fired by his mentor as an OC after a year and a half he regrouped, focused on position coaching, then making the right vertical jump at the right time, and eventually worked his way up to where he was widely considered a better hire than Brian Kelly. Stricklin on the other hand knows he's on very thin ice, Hell if he has half a brain he knows that he should have been fired for cause a couple years ago. He knows this is the best job he'll ever get and his failure to date is probably the single biggest destruction of a program in both of the $$$$$ sports in the history of NCAA athletics where the deal penalty or major sanctions weren't a factor. Even Foley, the ultimate narcissist who probably still thinks the SEC is going to come calling for a commish job (very much like Mullen thinking the NFL is sure to grab him before long), has to realize that once his puppet falls they're going to hire a real AD who won't let him hang out in the building. Head scratching decisions and odd quotes (which I happen to love because I can mock them) aside, Napier presents as accountable and transparent. I really like the guy and would love for it to turn out that these are growing pains and he actually is what he was packaged as coming in. If the President actually grabbed some sac and made a change at AD I think he'd have a much better chance, but sadly I don't think that's going to happen.

I saw "Year Zero" in an article by Pat Dooley on MSNBC.com, but it's so full of ads that my laptop+browser can't handle it, even with AdBlock Plus doing it's best. Anyway, probably coined by Dooley - it fits the mold.

Anyway, probably coined by Dooley - it fits the mold. Agreed, it wreaks of Dooley. Small credit where it's due, Dooley has knocked on the door to objectivity over access the last year or two, but when it comes to Foley/Stricklin he's got an absolute block and always has. I guess nostalgia and misplaced credit could drive it for Foley, but there is no reason anybody should not be critical of Stricklin at this point. He's a joke, and not a good one. It could also be Scott Carter, when I was trying to find it and the 10 year plan analysis (I should have just checked my rage threads) I stumbled across this piece of literary genius the sums up everything wrong with the Year 0/10 Year/Spoiled Fans/Kool-aid mentality: floridagators.com/news/2023/3/21/football-gators-napier-remains-committed-to-plan-eager-for-improved-results-in-year-2.aspxBest part: "Napier has shown a real-deal Billy, a down-to-earth approach in dealing with all kinds, and his cerebral outlook on building a program has remained as steady as his hairstyle."

It's a deal man. Steady Eddie with meticulous attention to detail. And that's how we do the things we do, and we do them more than the last time, so that 1 extra time becomes an extra part of the process and the process feeds the progress and I'm feeling really good about where my hair and this program are not only at, but also going to be when we're done. Right?

Steady hair is a critical trait in a head coach.
