I look for the Tenn game to be very ugly for us. I was just thinking of this earlier today. We are two plays away from being 0-3. Our defense can't stop the run, and we cannot generate consistent offense. I fully understand the situation that Billy Napier was left with, and I still fully support him (unlike some dolts of Facebook, who were proclaiming that he was in over his head after the Kentucky game). Predictions of a nine- or ten-win season did not take into account several years of substandard recruiting, inadequate player development and a lack of attention to depth at individual positions. The Mullen years were similar to the Zook years in those respects. The one possible exception was recruiting. Zook brought in some high powered talent. His recruiting didn't take into account team needs, and he was not good at player development.

SEC
Florida 31, South Florida 28 - Good lord. If not for bad snaps on two plays at the end of the game by USF, we could well be discussing a loss. The Bulls rushed for 286 yards. Unless the Gators figure out a way to stop the run, next week could be ugly. The offense looked out of sync all night, with Richardson again overthrowing open receivers. The Gators were outgained by about 70 yards.
Texas A&M 17, Miami 9 - The Hurricanes won this game everywhere except the scoreboard. Total yardage, 392-264. First downs, 27-16. Passing 217-140. Rushing, 175-124. That said, they had only three field goals to show for the evening's work, and their lone turnover, a muffed punt, set up an Aggie touchdown.
Arkansas 38, Missouri State 27 - The Razorbacks hardly looked like the nation's #10 team. They dug a 17-0 hole early and spent the rest of the game coming back, needing a 21 point fourth quarter to pull away.
Georgia 48, South Carolina 7 - Three interceptions helped the Bulldogs build a 48-0 lead.
Kentucky 31, Youngstown State 0 - The Wildcats rolled despite three turnovers.
Ole Miss 42, Georgia Tech 0 - 547 yards of total offense for the Rebels.
Vanderbilt 38, Northern Illinois 28 - The Commodores scored 21 points in the third quarter.
Missouri 34, Abilene Christian 17 - The Tigers led 17-3 at the half.
Penn State 41, Auburn 12 - Four turnovers killed any chance that the Tigers had to make it a game. Their touchdown came early in the fourth quarter, after the Nittany Lions led 31-6.
Alabama 63, Louisiana-Monroe 7 - About as competitive as you would expect.
Tennessee 63, Akron 6 - Why the Zips kicked a field goal in the fourth quarter while trailing 56-3 is beyond me. Akron was outgained by 400 yards.
LSU 31, Mississippi State 16 - For the first time in 22 years, the Tigers were an underdog in a game against the Bulldogs. LSU scored 21 points in the fourth quarter after trailing 16-10.
National games
UCLA 32, South Alabama 31 - The Bruins narrowly avoided disaster with a field goal on the final play.
Washington 39, Michigan State 28 - The Huskies rolled the Spartans, leading 29-8 at the half.
Oregon 41, Brigham Young 20 - The Ducks led 38-7 in the third quarter as they totally dominated the Cougars.
Oklahoma 49, Nebraska 14 - The Cornhuskers drove 77 yards for a touchdown on their opening drive, then the Sooners scored 49 unanswered points.
Southern Illinois 31, Northwestern 24 - The FCS Salukis led by 14 in the fourth quarter.
Syracuse 32, Purdue 29 - A 25 yard touchdown pass with seven seconds remaining won it for the Orange. Syracuse led 10-9 after three quarters.
Florida State 35, Louisville 31 - A late interception preserved the victory for the Seminoles, who are 3-0 for the first time in seven years. FSU played much of the game with a backup QB.
Virginia 16, Old Dominion 14 - The Cavaliers kicked a field goal on the final play.
Tulane 17, Kansas State 10 - The Green Wave overcame two turnovers to claim the upset in Manhattan.
Kansas 48, Houston 30 - The Jayhawks spotted the Cougars a 14-0 lead before scoring 28 straight points. Kansas is 3-0 for the first time since 2009.
Appalachian State 32, Troy 28 - The Mountaineers connected on a 53-yard touchdown pass as time expired.
Bowling Green 34, Marshall 31, OT - A week after beating Notre Dame, the Thundering Herd fell to the Falcons on the road. BG was 0-2 prior to this game. Marshall had three turnovers.
Wake Forest 37, Liberty 36 - After the Demon Deacons took a 37-30 lead with 3:39 remaining, the Flames scored on an 18-yard pass with 1:11 left. They went for the win, but missed the two point conversion.
Eastern Michigan 30, Arizona State 21 - How much longer will Herm Edwards survive at ASU?

No "We need to learn how to finish". No throwing assistants under the bus. No calling out players for making mistakes. No vague "We will get it fixed." This is a refreshing change. "When the students don't perform as well as you want them to, I think, as a coach and as a teacher, you've got to take a good look in the mirror," Napier said. "I think that's exactly what I'm going to do, what our staff's going to do."
Taking ownership. Ownership over the mistakes, ownership over the miscommunications and ownership over the improvement that Florida needs to make, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
"I think when you are in a leadership position and things are not going the way they should go or you want them to go, you've got to take ownership of that," Napier reiterated.Napier Takes Ownership, Stresses Same to His TeamThis is what leaders do. When I was in upper management and a problem came up, I looked at our processes - our training, our preparation, our forms, everything. Looking for a scapegoat wasn't on my radar. Blaming an individual does no good when the process needs improvement.

Now that Scott Frost is gone, stories are beginning to surface that explain the timing of Nebraska's decision to dismiss him. Hearing them, one wonders why he even got this season to try to fix things. Among the allegations, repeatedly late for practice, failing to follow up with recruiting calls. Assistant coaches also went to the AD with issues, because Frost wouldn't address them. Troubling Scott Frost Story Goes Viral: Football World ReactsNebraska Football: Ugly accusations surface after Scott Frost’s departureHaving said that, there’s a reason the saying “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” is such a popular one. It’s a truism of course. And when it comes to the things that have started seeping out about the Nebraska football program under Scott Frost, it seems as if the narrative pushed by far too many in the local media; that Scott Frost worked harder and longer and wanted success more than anyone else in the state, was not entirely true.
The whispers have been there before, they’ve been there since the beginning. But during a Sunday interview that just exploded on Tuesday afternoon, one local sports radio talk show host came close to blowing the lid off the house of cards that was Frost’s reputation.
Severe then detailed things that he said the Cornhuskers Athletic Director couldn’t talk about but were very clearly major contributing factors to why the former Huskers coach was fired just three games into the season and just a few weeks before his buyout would have been greatly reduced.
“He can’t talk about his head coach showing up late to practice every day,” Severe continued. “He can’t talk about his head coach not making recruiting phone calls.” The radio host also made it clear that now that the regime change has officially happened, he’s freer to talk about these things.
“There’s a whole bunch of stuff …” he added. “It was a mess up there.” He then dropped one of the bigger bombshells of the entire appearance and one that really should have raised red flags. To the point where it’s a surprise things were indeed kept so quiet around the Nebraska football program.
While Severe’s accusations are the most specific to come from a member of the local media in the wake of Frost’s firing, those around Nebraska football have talked about the perceived lack of attention to detail before. Of course, it certainly appears “lack of attention to detail” is an extremely generous way of describing what’s been going on in Lincoln for the last four years.

Eddie Pineiro kicking for the Carolina Panthers
Jacoby Brissett quarterbacking the Cleveland Browns
Evan McPherson kicking for the Cincinnati Bengals (not one of his better days)

As I think about this game, I go back to my thought that we're going to lose some games in the 4th quarter this year. The team is too thin and the coaches will walk a tightrope trying to keep fresh legs in the game. Throw in some (many) mistakes and it's too much to overcome. Gators got a tough row to hoe this year, in spite of beating the pride of the PAC12. This roster includes three years of Dan Mullen recruiting classes. All those two- and three-stars that the smartest guy in the room was going to coach up.

A home loss to a Sun Belt team, after blowing an 11-point lead to Northwestern on the heels of a 3-9 season, proved to be the breaking point for the patience of Nebraska's athletic department. Most (me included) thought that they would wait until October 1 (the day of a home game against Indiana), when his buyout would have dropped by $7.5M. Perhaps boosters approached the athletic department and told them no problem, we have seen enough.
Georgia Southern hung over 600 yards of total offense and 45 points on them. That isn't great.
Their AD acted after a loss to Georgia Southern. Ours dug in and doubled down.

Expect his dismissal on October 1 or 2. A friend pointed out that his buyout drops by $7.5M on October 1. That day is a Saturday, and they may not fire him on a game day, unless it's after the game.

The SEC? The Big Ten? No, the Sun Belt!
Marshall over Notre Dame (ACC/independent)
Appalachian State over Texas A&M (SEC)
Georgia Southern over Nebraska (Big Ten)
Their commissioner has to be ecstatic over today's results.

K-Cat's TE's making catches all over the field with no Gators within 5 yards of them? They obviously studied the Utah game film, when the TE was their main weapon.

SEC Kentucky 26, Florida 16 - This game was as bad as last week's was good, Anthony Richardson played like a sophomore in his third start - 14/35 with two interceptions, one leading to a Kentucky TD and the other being returned for one. The defense caved all night, especially on pass plays. The Wildcats had 272 yards passing, to Florida's 143. A dreadful effort on both sides of the ball. Kentucky obviously took a page out of the Utah playbook, because the tight end gave us fits all night.
Alabama 20, Texas 19 - The Longhorns could have - and probably should have - won this game. They missed a field goal at the end of the half, going into the locker room 10-10. Texas took a 19-17 lead with 1:29 remaining, then a 33 yard field goal with ten seconds remaining beat them. Alabama was penalized 15 times, the most ever under Nick Saban. Alabama only scored in the first and fourth quarters.
Appalachian State 17, Texas A&M 14 - The giant killers strike again. The game was tied twice, but the Aggies never led. After the Mountaineers took a 14-7 lead in the third quarter, A&M returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. App State made a 29-yard field goal with 8:09 remaining stand up. The Mountaineers lost two fumbles.
Kansas State 40, Missouri 12 - The Wildcats led 20-3 at the half. The Tigers turned the ball over four times.
Tennessee 34, Pittsburgh 27, OT - The Panthers scored on a 4-yard touchdown pass with 2:23 remaining to send the game to OT. In the OT, Tennessee scored and Pitt didn't. There was one yard difference in total offense.
Arkansas 44, South Carolina 30 - The Razorbacks led 21-9 at the half, and they scored 23 points in the fourth quarter. Carolina had three turnovers.
Georgia 33, Samford 0 - The Bulldogs cruised to an easy win over an overmatched opponent.
Auburn 24, San Jose State 16 - The Tigers trailed 10-7 at the half. Auburn had two turnovers.
Ole Miss 59, Central Arkansas 3 - The Bears had four turnovers. They were outgained by the Rebels 508-233.
Wake Forest 45, Vanderbilt 25 - Wake led 21-10 at the half. Vandy's three turnovers didn't help.
LSU 65, Southern 17 - The Tigers led 51-0 at the half.
Mississippi State 39, Arizona 17 - The Wildcats had 40 yards rushing on 22 attempts.
National games
Marshall 26, Notre Dame 21 - How can I not lead off with the best score of the week? I knew that the Irish's fraudulent top ten ranking would be exposed, but I didn't believe that it would be the Thundering Herd who would do it. Marshall intercepted ND three times, one returned for a touchdown. It would have been four, but an interception on ND's last drive was nullified by a penalty. Notre Dame' last lead was 15-12 with 14:57 remaining. ND's last score was with 14 seconds remaining after Marshall had scored 14 unanswered points.
Georgia Southern 45, Nebraska 42 - The Scott Frost firing countdown is officially under way. An eight-yard touchdown run with 36 seconds remaining clinched it for the Eagles. This game was 28-28 at the half. Southern won despite having two turnovers. They had 642 yards total offense - against a Big Ten team. Oklahoma visits Lincoln next week. "We got beat on schemes, and I really didn't have an answer", said the coach who is soon to be unemployed. Nebraska had taken their only lead of the second half before the winning score. They missed a field goal on the final play.
Washington State 17, Wisconsin 14 - Both teams had three turnovers. All of the Badgers' points came in the second quarter.
Texas Tech 33, Houston 30, 2OT - The Red Raiders led 17-3 at the half, but the Cougars rallied to take a 20-17 lead with 37 seconds remaining. Tech tied the game 34 seconds later. The teams traded touchdowns in the first OT, then Tech scored a TD after Houston kicked a field goal in the second.
Incarnate Word 55, Nevada 41 - Ever heard of Incarnate Word? I believe that they know them in Reno now. The Cardinals led 24-17 at the half and never trailed again, eventually stretching the lead to 38-17. IWU had 616 yards total offense. It's in San Antonio, for you trivia buffs.
North Carolina 35, Georgia State 28 - The Tarheels scored the only fourth quarter points in a 28-28 game. GSU trailed 21-10 at the half, but the Panthers scored 18 points in the third quarter to draw even.
Louisville 20, Central Florida 14 - The Knights led 14-7 at the half, but they didn't score in the final two quarters.
Air Force 41, Colorado 10 - The Falcons led 21-10 at the half. They outgained the Buffaloes 443-162.
Texas-San Antonio 41, Army 38, OT - The Roadrunners trailed 21-14 at the half. A 7-yard touchdown pass in OT won it. Almost 1,000 yards total offense.
Brigham Young 26, Baylor 20, 2OT - A future Big 12 matchup was taken by the Cougars, who scored the only points in OT. BYU missed a two point conversion in OT2, but it didn't cost them. Both teams missed field goals in the first OT.

I think we should send a gift basket to Scott Woodward because he wanted to make a splash by getting a moron who fakes accents and had his ability to hire staff removed at Notre Dame 5 years ago (in exchange for not being fired) over the guy down the street with recruiting ties in the State, training under 2 top 5 coaches, and success on his own merits. This is going to fail so spectacularly and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. I'm guessing that LSU was probably Napier's dream job. That is understandable, given his location and history. When they didn't come calling, instead he got a sleeping giant inside one of the top two or three recruiting areas in the country.

LSU broke the bank to get this idiot. His contract includes a $500K bonus for making a bowl game. Not a New Year's Six bowl. Not the national playoff. Any bowl game. They signed on for ten years of this to the tune of $100M plus bonuses which can reach $1.325M per season. I am floored by the bowl game clause. There are so many bowl games that over half the teams in FBS are invited to one. You don't even have to be at or above .500 to get to one. The buyout would be monstrous if they were inclined to think that way - and they will be.

LSU's Brian Kelly wears the loss to FSU as much as any player on the field - perhaps more. I will explain.
For most of the night, Florida State outplayed LSU. LSU's special teams in particular were a total fiasco. Two muffed punts, both recovered by FSU, a blocked field goal and a blocked extra point. The latter speaks to my point.
LSU's special teams put them in a spot where they were down 14 in the fourth quarter. After LSU scored to cut the lead to 24-17 and they got their first three-and-out of the night, their second muffed punt set FSU up first and goal at the LSU eight. Inexplicably, with a chance to close the door FSU ran a pitch play from inside the LSU one (easily as boneheaded as anything that Kelly did), the pitch was fumbled and LSU got the ball back 99 yards away from the end zone with 1:20 left. Odds were heavily against them, but they weren't zero, as they would have been had Florida State scored.
Against these same odds, LSU drove 99 yards and scored a touchdown as the clock expired in regulation. They could have attempted a two point conversion for the win. If they made it, game over. If they missed it, their fans would at least appreciate that they tried to win the game to cap off an incredible comeback. Instead, Kelly played for overtime in a game that his squad was on the wrong end of for almost the entire night. He was at a disadvantage most of the time, yet given a choice between going for the win and extending the game, he chose the latter.
Worse yet, and perhaps most egregious, he put the task of sending the game to overtime into the hands of his special teams unit, which had been awful all night. It should not have been a tremendous surprise, then, that a blocked extra point ruined an improbable LSU comeback.
For only $10M per year, you can buy these kinds of decisions.

The most recent ESPN power rankings. College football Power Rankings after Week 111. Florida Gators (1-0) With quarterback Anthony Richardson behind center, suddenly it feels as if the Gators have a chance to exceed outside expectations - especially after a 29-26 win over Utah. Richardson had three touchdowns and 274 total yards, while his offensive line played a dominant game up front. Though the defense struggled to contain Utah quarterback Cam Rising and their terrific tight ends, Amari Burney made the play that needed to happen with an interception in the end zone to seal the victory. -- Adelson
Up next: vs. Kentucky (Saturday, 7 p.m. ET, ESPN/ESPN App)About last week's opponent. 16. Utah Utes (0-1) The Utes played the type of game they wanted to against Florida but have to be lamenting the missed opportunities after a 29-26 loss. Utah dominated the Gators up front on the offensive line, rushing for 230 yards on the ground, but failed to score any points on multiple trips inside the Florida 6-yard line. Two other trips inside the Florida 25-yard line ended in field goals. Then with a chance to tie or win, Cam Rising threw an interception in the end zone -- an unlikely finish considering how well he played in the game (216 yards passing, 91 yards rushing). -- Andrea Adelson
Up next: vs. Southern Utah (Saturday, 1:30 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network)
