This team will not win 6 games. Might not win 5. They won't win four. Despite the Mario Cristobal factor, I expect Miami to roll us in the home opener, setting the tone for a catastrophic season. I have watched several preseason prognostications. None of them expect us to crack .500.

So, I am not putting any research into who our on field coaches are, but does anyone know if Mark Hocke is one of them? I understand he is really wanting to learn how to do this coaching thing, so it would make sense for him to be out there. Oddly, when I go to the official website of the athletic department, I get a 404 Page Not Found error when I try to look up the football coaching staff.

Well I guess I should have read the article but I got excited. We haven’t actually hired him, but we have “zeroed in” on him. And it won’t be an on field coaching position. He will oversee ST as an analyst. In other words, same setup, just someone else potentially doing it. Great.

The only issue that I have is that it gives Foley too much credit. To show how truly bad that both of them have been at hiring coaches, it is necessary to back Urban Meyer out of the equation. He was strictly a Bernie Machen hire.

Henceforth, Napier and Stricklin will be known as the Delta Dumbass Duo, DDD for short for simplicity when posting about them simultaneously. Because efficiency. That's a deal there, right?
Another Taps gem.

How many more excuses are we expected to swallow for a failure to close in the recruiting process?

We're next. The NCAA has opened an investigation into the recruitment of Jalen Rashada.

"I think Billy has that group."
Half of his first recruiting class just hit the transfer portal. Our best offensive and defensive players just signed with other SEC schools. We are playing both of them in 2024. Napier has done nothing to address the abysmal offensive play calling or the atrocious special teams. We have one of the country's worst defenses, yet we fired our best coaches on that side of the ball, as evidenced by their quick hiring afterward. Our latest recruiting class sunk like a rock once the kids who were once committed rethought what they were signing up for. What exactly are we supposed to be optimistic about - and what will be the excuse when Lagway hits the transfer portal due to poor development and a lack of playing time?

IMO this goes far beyond NIL money. Not every kid is going where the most money is, yet we are still losing out on almost all of them. There is a systemic problem, and this should take both Napier and Stricklin down with it. The down side is that it will also bring with it a fourth consecutive losing season, more significant losses through the transfer portal, and an even deeper hole for the incoming head coach and AD to tunnel out of.

“Our overall roster is going to be older,” Stricklin said. “Older teams beat up younger teams. You look at the teams that played in the College Football Playoff; there were a lot of veterans on those teams. One of the keys in college football — really, in all college sports these days — is you need to be old and you need to figure out a way to stay old. “So we’re going to be older.” Starkville Scotty is a fucking moron. If age led to success, Brigham Young would win the national championship every year. A lot of their guys don't play until after they return from their mission assignments.

There is an article in the Orlando Sentinel in which Stricklin insists that Napier isn't on the hot seat. I couldn't read the whole thing or link to it because it's behind a firewall that requires a subscription that I don't care enough to pay for.

Looks like I was a little premature in taking the college coaching carousel down. Saban retired, Washington's coach to Alabama, Arizona's coach to Washington, now Jim Harbaugh talking to NFL teams.
Resident ESPN loudmouth Steven A. Smith was pushing Deion as "ideal" for Alabama, a year after ripping Auburn for not hiring him.

Steve Sarkisian and Mike Norvell have also quashed rumors that they might be going to Alabama. A sports writer claimed that Dan Lanning was in Tuscaloosa, right about the time that Lanning stated that he was staying at Oregon.
Generally, you don't want to be the one who follows the legend.

gatorswire.usatoday.com/2024/01/09/florida-football-aidan-warner-transfer-portal-commitment/Huge get. I have a hard team believing that we only beat out Minnesota and Miami for this kid who red-shirted at Yale. Bama and UGA probably trying to stay under the radar soas not to frighten off high school kids knowing that Awesome Aidan would be taking the starters reins for the next 2 years before heading to the NFL. I'm telling you though, between the success of secret words and players coaches on special teams and now having 2 Ivy Leaguers, we're going to a lot more player-coaches including at QB. This will free up a slot for a 3rd Offensive line coach, speculation is that we'll have a Center coach, a Guard coach, and a tackle coach. Also, can we get another DC in here please? You don't hear about 2 headed monsters, we need a third. That way Austin can be in charge of jumping around like a pudgy 5 year old who found the pixie stick stash, Ronnie can be in charge of late game prevent, and the third musketeer can make sure that the scooter that 500 lbs. Desmond Watson requires to check into and out of the game is fully charged. Dude I’m dying over here.. I would pay real money to see Taps do a Napier parody post game press conference.

One of the knocks on Frost at Nebraska was a dictatorial approach with his assistants. He was not open to the observations or ideas of others, and it finally got to the point that some assistants went to the AD about it.

College football has become more complicated and more of a pain since he left it. I don't see him leaving the NFL for a college job. He also bailed on USC with an NCAA investigation pending.

The more that I think about it, the more that I like Mike Gundy. Keen offensive mind, players play hard for him, and he has gotten blood out of a stone at times at Oklahoma State. He has probably peaked where he is, and I know that he would be highly motivated to achieve more. Florida would give him the resources, both in terms of intangibles and a fertile recruiting ground.

One thing I’ve learned through the years is that if everyone is the boss, no one is the boss. I’ve never seen an organization succeed without the buck stopping somewhere. When you get a lot of same level leadership there’s not enough accountability. It needs to be the HCs job to run the football program, full stop. I see a lot of finger pointing, players being blamed for coaching mistakes, and nothing really getting fixed.

It is a foregone conclusion that Billy Napier will be fired in 2024. The only question is whether it will be during the season or after it. Who do the Gators turn to next to find an effective leader to produce results? No right or wrong answers, just a topic of discussion. Before anybody suggests it, however, we aren't getting Steve Spurrier, Urban Meyer or Bob Stoops.
